I think whoever invented a vacuum operated four wheel drive system should be horsewhipped. It makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. What the hell is wrong with mechanical linkages that work when you need them to? That and manual hubs.

Makes me appreciate my old 1969 Chevy truck that much more.

You can find the kits online at summitracing.com, amazon.com, even ebay.... Just make sure you get the kit for your truck, also they make two different version.

The vacuum actuator should be on the passenger side of the housing..... if it isn't, I can see how that might cause some trouble....

Welcome to DF

You are right it is on the drivers side for a 89, so you would need to move to fork/collar towards the drivers wheel to lock it in 4wd.

You have posted in the 2nd gen area not the 1st gen area (you have a first gen truck), our trucks have the cad on the pass side of the diff.

Please take the time to fill out your sig with your trucks info, that will help others when answering your Q's.

That is rather a key piece of information..... and why we ask that you put such info in your sig, and profile. Merc is quite correct.
