Default Engine Code Explanation

I just purchased a 2001 2500 4wd quad with a diesel motor . Has 172000 on the odometer. I pulled up the engine codes thru the odom screen . It had a few misc. codes and a P1693. The code list I found here states it is ( DTC Detected in Companion JTEC MOD) . The dealership told me it was a problem relating to the PCM or Ecm. I cleared all codes and this showed up again in less than 5 miles. I wanted to know if anyone had more info on what this code means . Is my ecm/pcm going out ? Is something else causing problems for the ecm/pcm ? Is this safe to drive or is this something that can leave me stranded along side the road? New to the forum but I love it already.

No , no aftermarket anything that I am aware of. How could I determine if it had a chip or tuner system? It seems like it has good power and driveability. I just want to make sure I am not doing any damage.

Welcome to DF.

P1693 is a "companion code" meaning simply that the other "computer" has a code. I guess diesels of these model years have a separate PCM and ECM (unlike gassers that have just a PCM). If the PCM has that code, it means there are codes for the ECM, and vice versa.

According to various Dodge diesel forums, all codes from both PCM and ECM should pop up through the digital readout at the same time. Otherwise most auto parts stores will read your codes for free.

Thanks , I had read that about it being a companion code. There were 4 other codes that were present along with the 1693. 1. p122 throttle or pedal position sensor 2. p460 fuel level unit no change over miles(sensor circuit malfunction) 3. p463 fuel level sending unit (circuit) volts too high 4. no ( malfunction) vehicle speed sensor signal. I reset all these codes and the 1693 code is the only one that has show back up. I didn't mention the codes before as they reset and didnt come back. Any idea what all these in combonation could mean?

Well another case of thinking my situation was unique from everyone else's problem. Thanks to MOPAR1973MAN , and jasonw I found out that the 1693 cannot be the only code in storage. I was only reading the code from the pcu and not letting the codes from the ecu show up,thanks to this post http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/98...odes-solo.html After pulling the codes correctly this time I see that the p122 codes is showing agin in the ecu, so that is where I will start and see what else comes up . Anyone with engine code problems would be way ahead to do a little reading on MOPAR1973MAN 's website. www.Mopar1973Man.com Thanks to eveyone who replied.

Your P0122 code could be a bad TPS or APPS sensor.
