Default What does this hose do?

So I stopped at the gas station and looked around my truck while fueling up and saw this hose hanging down from the rear axle. It looks like the bracket broke from where it is held, but I can figure out where it goes and I am hoping for some guidance. Does anyone know where this hose goes? I think that it is the air vent for the axle but I'm not sure. Any help would be great.

You don't want it plugged. The little cap on the end is designed to let pressure out, but, not let water in..... It usually works..... If it is plugged solid, pressure builds in the differential, and blows seals......

Cool.

Thats one of those things that the factory does 'good enough'.... but, if you do deep water at all, extending the hose up into the engine compartment somewhere isn't such a bad plan at all. Higher up the better.

Yep, there is a vent on top of the trans as well. that one is just open to atmosphere.... great plan.... NOT.

On my last 4x4, I tied the rear axle vent, tranny vent, front axle vent, and T-case vent, all into the same line, ran it up into the cowl, where the HVAC inlet ducting is, and put the neat little cap on the end there. I could drive thru water that lapped up on the hood, and everything would stay nice and clean.... well, on the inside at least....... just had to keep the 'bow wave' going, so I didn't drown the engine. the snorkel came later.... but, never was necessary, I tried to stay out of water that made that kind of thing necessary...... Tried......
