Default Dissolving Locktite

Well crap,

Snapped a header bolt off in the cylinder head. I think I have enough left sticking out to dremel the end and back it out with a long screwdriver, but that won't get me much torque and I used blue locktite on the threads.

What dissolves locktite? I'll probably have to use a ton of that and then some knocker loose.

I will add that specifically it is permatex blue threadlocker.

I will give the old acetone a try. I've also heard MEK works, but I like my liver, and I'll avoid that if I can.

Heat the area and extract the broken piece while it's hot. Sometimes it helps if you rap the fastener with a hammer.

The official remover is methylene chloride.

Heat will break down the thread locker. The permatex website says the high temp stuff is good to 400*F so it probably break down around 500*F.

Man, can MEK even be acquired without a permit? In the Navy, the guy who ran the paint locker on board ship smoked with an open 55-gallon drum of MEK right there.

Anyway, heat always works. You know the old saying, "Kill it with fire!"

Here I was all gung ho to tell you what the solution is, and then I walk away from the comp for a few minutes.

Anyways, I've always had good luck with getting the piece out by itself, soaking in wd-40 and then applying propane heat. Makes the surrounding area look not so pretty, but it usually works....

Man, blue locktite??? Bet you wont be using that one again.

I was on a racing team for years and we always used a propane or Mapp gas torch on blue or red loctite. Heat even works on green (sometimes).
