I personally have not ran into this. But have read some of the other posts about this very issue. The common fix is replacing the oil pressure switch that is located next to the distributor. I believe that it will take a 1' wrench to take off. I am having to replace mine, just because I accidentally hit it with a vice grip. :P its a 32 dollar part at either oreilly or autozone.

nah man it aint the sending unit. just an old engine. clearances have increased and oil pressure has dropped a shade over the years, just enough to where the gauge cant pick it up (5 psi). min idle pressure is 6 psi. dont worry about it mines got 170k and the gauge has been doin that for a year now

Mine has 160k, and the oil pressure is quite stable. never less than 40 pounds, even at idle when hot.

it doesnt happen to all of them. many of em have the problem and many dont. im pretty sure even tho that gauge appears to be a "true" functional gauge it is no better than ford's dummy gauge with hi med and low. pressure at idle should be around 8 psi, whereas it indicates 40

Cool

When I was having some issues with the oil pressure fluctuating I started asking a lot of questions in here. After doing the research I was going to put a high flow oil pump in as well. One of the guys steered me in the direction of not paying attention to my dummy gauge inside the truck and talk me into installing a mechanical gauges because they're more accurate.

Before I installed my new oil pump the mechanical gauge was reading the oil pressure at 15psi at idle and it went as high as 25,35psi at normal driving speeds. My dashboard gauge was never the same readings and never got above 40? Even with a new oil pressure sensor switch.

So I ended up installing a standard oil pump. At idle speeds I'm around 35 to 40 psi and cruising speeds it is 65 and as high as 78 on a mechanical gauge. In my case I think my old pump was just worn out. I spent a lot of time cleaning everything and making sure the pickup screen was perfectly cleaned before reinstalling.
