99 ram 2500 5.9 gas - no spark
My truck won't start, just turns over. I can smell fuel pretty strong under the hood. I tested the coil and I am getting spark at the coil. No spark at plugs. I am now replacing wires, cap, rotor but they all look pretty good. What else could it be?
Weak coil maybe?
Weak coil maybe?
If the coil makes a nice fat spark across .065" it's certainly strong enough to run the engine so you'd then be looking at rotor, cap, and/or coil high voltage wire.
Be careful when testing that you don't get electrocuted or blowed up.

coil high voltage wire, eh? what should i be looking for?
I am getting a good strong spark at the coil.
I dont drive this truck much so it sat for like a week..but it was raining when i first noticed it wouldnt start and water was leaking in the engine bay due to some bad seals between the hood and firewall.

plug a plug (yeah, ok, that sounds good...) into the end of your coil wire, and ground it against the engine, crank engine, does it spark? (Do NOT hold it there with your hand, or anything conductive, you won't like the result.)

Do you get spark at the end of the coil wire?
If you do, then pull the spark plug off of the number one cylinder, stuff a plug into it, ground it on the engine, and give it a crank. Got spark there?

No. Thats what I dont understand. I get spark when I run a plug and wire from the coil, but nothing when I run a plug and wire from dist cap. Rotor turns, cap, rotor, wires are new... running out of ideas. THe only other thing I can think of is the coil is weak.
If it was a computer, relay, ground, or power issue would I get spark from the coil? I pulled the cap and cranked it over and the rotor turns, I thought it might be a distributor problem...... LOST
I'll buy a new coil in the morning. I'm gonna burn this truck if I work on it anymore tonight.
