Default The night before the gears go in... UPDATED

So tomorrow I drop the truck off to get the gears installed (on wens) and I need to pick up a few little things before I send it on its way.

Gear oil!

Is there a break in gear oil out there?

I know there is a break in motor oil which made me think that there might be a break in gear oil as well.

What weight?

I forget what weight gear oil to use and how much I'm going to need to fill both diffs up. I was going to grade some royal purple from pepboys.

I hope everything goes good with the install. I'm almost in fear of getting a phone call saying you truck needs more work.

Its going to be a long 1k before I can let it rip. Dad is going to be doing the break in for the most part he drive a lot farther for work than I do. Hell I only start my truck 4 days a week lol.

Wish me luck.

You don't really need to worry about any of that aside from the break in, if you're getting the work done.

Get a decent dino fluid for the break-in period. It's gotta be drained and inspected at 500 miles anyway. Then go with the high end, high dollar stuff...

Thanks for the link there Hammer! I guess when I do my gears next spring, my brother will have to drive my truck... as he puts fewer miles on a day then I do.

I agree, dino oil to start but I'd probably want to let it go 1500 or so miles, it does take a while for the gears to wear in. Besides, if something goes wrong it will likely happen way before you change the oil.

I'm in the same boat as you dads driver more than me so he will be racking up the miles and not me, Plus he is easyer on the skinny petal.

They should fill it with oil, I wouldn't buy any.

Factory book says 75w90, 75W140 for towing. The guys that installed my gear set swore to me that was too thin for Texas heat. He recommended 85w140. They do all sorts of axles, from passenger, to semi, to construction/demolition equip.

If you're buying oil, buy really cheap for the break in period. Upgrade after you've developed the wear pattern and burned off the phosphorus (500-1000 miles).

I'm only paying for install. I don't think it includes gear oils which is why I was going to bring in it.

No matter what they tell you, gears should have not a hint of a whine in them, if they whine when you pick it up, take it right back!

Out of curiosity, what brand of gears and locker did you go with?
