Oh, TAG! I was having evil thoughts like this too.

OK, from some research, you going to need a 2004–2008 5.7 L (345 cu in) Hemi V8 - I did a search at car-parts.com and did a search for 2005 dodge ram 1500 and found some places that have some available, with mileage and prices.

by all the time and money spent to do a hemi, that isnt that powerful, you could prob build yourself a bullet proof 360, that will outrun a hemi anyday, the hemis are overrated and there not even a true hemi

I couldn't have worded this any better myself. I would take the 360 Magnum anyday over the 5.7 Hemi...not to be byist, but I feel the Magnum is the better engine, and they only got rid of them because of emissions.

Actually... its 100 more rated horsepower......

Do they really have two plugs per cylinder?

in any event, for the time, effort, and MONEY you would spend putting a Hemi in there, you could get a bunch more usable power out of the 360, and still have money left.

yes your best choice is the 360 or go get a 440 and run a carb stup and make it way way way eaier since you wont have to swap in a computer

And yes the hemi does have 2 plugs per cylinder which i dont look forward to replacing

Dropping in a hemi:
Will cost you about 10,000 for the install and to make it work properly. You will need to bring in the whole wiring harness and basically merge them. Not fun to do.

Doing this:

That is just heads, cam roller rockers, underdrive pulley, and a dyno tune. You will have 10 less horsepower than a hemi at the wheels, but abou6 60 ft/lbs more torque.

Hemi Rear wheel HP?TQ: 232 HP/ 280 TQ
BUDGET BUILT 360: 223 HP: 350 TQ

KEEP IN MIND, those were stock magnum RT heads that don't flow much better than stock. If you got Iron Ram heads from Hughes ($999) a cam from hughes (200), some harland sharp 1.6 roller rockers (364) and a SCT from hemifever (375) you can get significantly more power than a hemi. You are looking at something you can do in a week by yourself for half the price of a junkyard hemi.

In repone to CPTAWi63 , what did you use for a manifold , and at a quick glance , it looks like you engine compartment looks like you have eliminated some of the clutter ! I have a 01 dodge Ram 2500 with a Fastman 52mm throtle body and a set of Pace Headers that go into a single 3 inch JBA exhaust ! I haven't had the extra money for a few other things yet , but in time ! What I would really like is to get rid of the clutter , but not lose anything power wise !

I would say try the new RHS heads... They flow almost as well as the HEMI heads with 267/201 @ .600 (they`re still around 250/180 @.500) and are going for $320ea on ebay. They were developed by INDY for Comp Cams Racing Head Services a couple of years ago. So far the word from the racing world is pretty friggin good. People seem to have no problems getting the intake side to hit 300+ and (for the die-hard LA fans) they also come in LA intake/rocker configuration.

The RHS Heads are BARE. You need to pay for springs, valves, retainers, seals, etc. SO 320 per head turns into 620 per head.

Also...What friggin camshaft would he use that would open the valves .600!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He would be using a race camshaft where the powerband would be from 3000-7000 RPMs.

Here is how flow rates work:
Our stock trucks open the valves about .430. So when you read those flow numbers, the numbers after .430 don't matter. So, to hit that .600 flow rate, you would need a MONSTER camshaft and you would need to cut valve reliefs in the pistons.
