I have the 01 Ram 1500 stock with the exception of the K&N CAI... 81,460 miles..bought it new in 2000. I live in Central California, no hills...none. With the 87 octane i got 12 MPG driving like granny, manual trans. Put the 89, same station, same driving habit received 15.5 mpg...yup 15.5 ! Now using 91 octane, removed tailgate, tools, etc... will keep you posted. Hav'nt tried highway yet. Just trying to see what is the best I can get.

something must be extremely wrong with your engine to have 89 octane give you a 25% increase in your fuel economy.
well when I drive like a grandma....I could get 16-16.3 mpg....I had to help my buddy move and raced A LOT...and got about 14.6....I actually got 19.1 on the interstate at 65mph for about 200 miles or less. Needless to say...I love my 318!!

I agree...I'm not so sure it was just the gas. I probably could have stretched the 87 test to 13 -13.5 but its just when I filled up again. I removed the shell (120-150 lbs ??) when I did the 89 test so I'm sure that helped (I know, did not mention earlier, sorry). I probably could have done 16 or 17 on the 89 test if I stretched this one too, but I don't like walking. With the 91 test I have also removed the tailgate (50 -60 lbs ??)and some tools I carry (60-70 lbs ??). Anyway those are my numbers
mythbusters tried removing the tail gate and they actullay got worse gas milage because of something to do with air flow
Yeah, I saw that one too. I am doing my own test just for my sake. When I am done with the 91 test, I will go back to the 87 octane with everything still off the truck and see the difference...again...if any.
I just drove my 99 ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.9 home (ny) from South Carolina.I averaged 14.5 mpg on the highway. Now that I am just driving around home and to work I am lucky to get 11 mpg.
