Default passenger front axle seal leaking oil

i had both seals replaced in january and when i brought it home from my mechanic, i noticed the passenger side to still be leaking, not as bad as previously, but still leaking. the driver side never leaked i just had it replaced since he had the carrier out. anyhow i took it back and he said the seal looked good but the shaft sealing surface itself looked like it possibly had a flaw in it (pitted),and thats the only reason he could see for it to be leaking. so do you guys think if i replace the shaft itll be good or will i have to replace the seal again or what?how would it get pitted? it barely leaks now, i havent filled it for months and it still pours out when i unscrew the plug, but it does leak a more in 4wd

Check bushings and bearings on the passenger side axle as well. If there is slop, it won't seal well.

reduce the oil level down to the fill plug of the diff, maybe even a tad below, but not where you can't touch it with your finger.

that will probably reduce or stop your leak.

The CAD has a seal outboard and one toward the diff.
So if the passenger side is leaking it's most likely the cad that is losing oil it holds I think 5 or 6 oz of 80w-90 GL5
But I agree with DHV that your diff is overfilled.
And the pitting for the axle shaft is from water, dirt etc entering the axle tube. kinda normal wear and tear

A d44 only has the one seal by the CAD. And of course the pitting could be the cause, but nine time's out of ten, it leaks because it was not installed with the correct tool and is slightly crooked. Which will cause rapid wearing and ultimately a leak.

what brand of seals are you using ? try National if you haven't already.

i went through a seal nightmare on my daughter's 4runner last year. they began to leak so i bashed in a new set, using my 1-11/16 socket, figuring i was done. they leaked. i redid them, bashed them in. one leaked. did it again. it held for awhile and then leaked again. replaced it again with toyota brand. it leaked. so i finally questioned my know-it-all technique and too-small socket and decided i was bending the metal casing around the rubber, causing it to stretch a little and open up. so i did it one last time with a heavier metal National brand from Advance, and used the tap-tap-tap method, staying right on the edge rather than bashing it with a socket. it worked and never leaked again.

another story. drove across a little too deep of a creek and noticed axle seal leakage when i got home. check diff fluid and found it overfull and full of water. drained and refilled all the way to the fill hole. it leaked pretty bad when full, but once it got down about an inch below the fill hole it would stabilize and not leak any significant amount. any time i filled it back up slap full, it would leak bad until it got back to that slightly low point, then quit.

i used timkens...and i know the seal was all the way in...i borrowed a seal drivr from my old boss....and it went in, after a nightmare of it turning sideways....

took a pick and felt all the way around and that it was pressed all the way in....cleaned axle tubes/shafts....didnt start leaking until about a month later...

You think it was in right by feel I suppose, anyone that does not use the proper precision made tool, which pulls it in as apposed to driving it in.And cleaning so you can eat off the axle(one little spec of dirt or axle grease on the bottom of the seat, will result in a not properly seated seal). I say good luck! Been there done that with my own home made tool to drive it in. Same thing happened, leak after month or so. Sucked it up bought the tool and cleaned every thing like I stated, and had no problems after.Your other problem is the Timken seals!

And of course the possibility that the bushing and bearing at the end of the axle in the CAD are shot.
