CAD reassembly help!!!
sorry for the new thread but i seriously need urgent help.
when you reinstall the output shaft and right axle shaft how do you position the fork and collar- if i put it all the way left the fork wont go far enough left for the holes on the cover to line up, if i put it over both axles it makes a weird creaking noise, if i put it all the way right everything is fine except the 4wd wont engage

nothing changes when i try to engage 4wd when the collar is installed over both shafts, no 4wd light in any case. with the collar installed over both shafts it always makes a creaking noise- not too terrible of a sound. everythings fine when i install the collar to the far right of the right shaft, except no 4wd
Leave the shift fork where it is then slide it over the groove in the middle of the shift collar. When you line up the CAD unit to put the bolts in then the shift collar will move to where it needs to be.
Sometimes you need to inch the truck forward or go to reverse then back to drive after you engage the 4x4 because the shift collar might not be lined up enough to shift all the way.
That and if you have a vacuum leak on one of those lines that plug into it then it will either not shift or it'll be really slow to shift.

As long as you have the fork in the center of the collar, it doesn't matter where the collar is on the shafts. When you start moving is when it will shift into 2wd or 4wd. In order to for it slide while sitting still, you will need to jack the right-side tire off the ground. The CAD is aggrevating if they get dirty or you have a vaccum leak.
From his first ? It sounds like he was not putting the fork ON the collar. That's why I posted the pic. If the fork is not installed BACKWARD in the housing! It will slide on the collar in any position. If it is in the groove of the collar and won't go into 4WD, then a vacuum problem is most likely the culprit.

yea ok then im not gettn vaccum to the cad i guess. cuz when i put the collar to the far right of the right shaft (2wd, right?), it wont go into 4wd, and when i put the collar over both shafts the axle wont unlock. any ways to narrow down the search part by part? isnt there some sort of valve on the t-case that can go bad?
again, sorry for the new thread zman

Yep, there is a vacuum switch on top of the T-case.... Before you just go swapping it out, follow your vacuum lines, and look for obvious damage. The metal lines tend to rust, and break....
Start the truck, unplug the lines at the axle, see if you have vacuum on either side. If you do, put the t-case in 4wd, vacuum should now be on the OTHER line. If you don't get one, or the other, chances are you have a leak in the lines between the T-case, and front axle, if you don't have vacuum at either, there is probably a leak between the source, up by the passenger side rear of the intake, and the switch on the t-case. If all the lines are good, then I would start looking at the switch.

What do you mean when you say "I put the collar to the left or I put the collar in the middle/over both shafts"? YOU don't put it anywhere. You put the fork on the collar and button it up. Start the truck and shift the TC.
