when doing a wet compression test, doesnt a large increase indicate worn rings? nominal increase indicates rings are good...
with that said, i vote HEADS!
Yep. You would be correct. My bad. (where is the facepalm emoticon?)
Rings would have to be REALLY bad for oil not to have a significant effect. (and that would be obvious by the scoring on the cylinder walls, which is NOT present in this case.)
40 psi (133% increase) is quite a bit, i would personally point to the rings.
however i would pull the heads as you'll need to pull them to tear into the bottom end anyhow (if it is indeed the rings), have them inspected and magnafluxed, then go from there
edit: and just to clarify- a significant increase on a wet test indicates bad rings
I think he already has the head on that side off? Otherwise, I would recommend doing a leakdown test.... it not only tells you how much of a leak, but, just WHERE it is going.

would a crack be noticeable in the leakdown though?
If its bad enough. Since he was getting **** poor pressure with a compression test, the leak down test would confirm if it was rings or not. You can HEAR where the air is escaping. One of my favorite tools.
