he said when they lathed .100, it was a 2 step deal, they eliminated the quench pad elevation (.085) and then took another .015 off of another part of the crown.

that confused me a bit and i didnt understand where he took the .015 from. it may have been that they elimated the quench pad and took .015 off of the entire crown, not sure. he said the extra .015 may have been shaved to attain .060 quench and reduce CR. he said he would personally want .040 and hes going to see if his machinist remembers who they got the .060 idea from.

the calculations are a bit odd, because with the pistons shaved .100, the dome was .010 above the deck. however in theory, it should be just about zero decked with the pistons shaved just .085.

he is going to rebalance it and reclay it for me

The little i have read not all 49pgs iam think he could of used a better matching piston. Granted in 05 maybe the other piston wasnt offered but you got new oversized pistons and could of got the newer one's. Tranny shops samething have to be up to date. Any good builder/machine shop are up to date on new product offered. How did you check how far the piston stucked out ?

not sure what your talking about with the tranny shop...

the kb356 are a perfect match without the elevated quench pad. the KB site even said machining will be required to attain optimum quench, its not a problem. i couldnt find the 412 for sale anywhere

the deck clearance was measure by the machine shop

BTW he has finished honing it +.010, he said he just has to do a final hone to get that nice MOLY finish

EDIT: just spoke with KB, the rep said they changed quench pad elevation from .050 to .085 back in '07, SO i guess he'll have to put the crank in the block with a piston and rod to recalculate the amount that needs to be machined from the pistons since the new pistons supposedely have an additional .035 on the quench pad

You don't want .060 quench if you can avoid it. .035 to .040 I think is where you want to be.

I'll add this knowledge and let others debate it.

The stock 5.2L 318ci magnum has a flat topped piston that almost zero decks. I believe it to be slightly in the hole, but i do not have an actual measurement.

The compressed thickness of the stock head gasket is .055 inches.

so i guess your trying to say the 318 is around .060?

we may end up at .040, im not sure... that is unless he has a legitimate reason to run the .060 quench. the KB rep said .040-.060 is a good quench.

so i guess we do have to mock up atleast one rod and piston to see what needs to be taken off, since KB decided to be a PITA and change quench pad elevation on me?

I would clay at least one, if not all. Granted, it is labor intensive....... (therefore: expensive....) but, do it once.... do it right.

he said he would charge what he charged back in '05, which was 52.50, granted that was only for one piston. one piston is fine with me though.

i calculated about $650 in all, but am waiting for him to give me the final bill

$70/hr

balancing is the one of the more expensive tasks at $175, BUT like you said, its worth the peace of mind

EDIT: i DO feel ALOT better now that were not just theorizing what specs should work, BUT actually measuring to determine what WILL work.

ill have to call him tomorrow to tell him to mock up a rod and piston to determine what needs to be shaved

just talked to him

hes going to put a piston and rod mock up in the block and calculate what needs to be shaved that way. we also decided to go with 0 deck clearance so i can use a .040 gasket to give me .040 quench

he said his machinist doesnt remember where he saw it, but for whatever reason someone or something said give the chrysler engine an extra .020 quench, so i dont know about that...
