Default starts on 2nd attempt

My 96 ram runs good , but i noticed that it never starts on the first attempt . Yes I have changed the plugs and wires...is this a typical issues wth year / model truck . I turn the key the first time it just turns over , reattempt it the second time it starts right up ....any ideas if this is normal or if not ,what it might be

Fuel pressure regulator on fuel pump is most likely no good. Get a fuel pressure tester. Connect it to the service port on the fuel rail. Start the motor and see what the pressure is. Turn motor off and see how long it holds pressure.

My 96, with 165K miles on it, fires on the first crank, every time. Of course, I have new cap/rotor/plugs/plenum fixed/timing chain and gears too.....

Zman , that sounds like a plausible idea . I will give it a try . If I do get poors readings after running the test , where might I find the fuel pressure regulator? Is it a part of the fuel pump and i just replace the pump or is it a seperated unit ?

The pressure regulator is mounted atop the pump and can be replaced separately.

Yeah, with a part from dealer that will cost as much as a whole pump from an AP store. And since the OP's truck is a 96, it's probably time anyway.

RockAuto has the pressure regulator kit that comes with new gaskets. It's $90 for the Standard brand. I'd bet the FLAPS might have them as well.
