I love my CAI and its just a cheapo ebay one, and I actually had a K&N drop in before I got the CAI, even with the filter it came with I notice a difference not much but enough to make me happy, at the time I noticed close to .7 mpg increase and it felt like it had a little more when passing cars

I run something similar to the Volant. An S&B with a fresh air tube.

Can't say its a ton better than my mopar performance air cleaner with the k&n element, but it definitely drops the temp.

My intake temp was 83 degrees at 70mph with the amibent temp at 48.

You have to understand, the Volant with the "Fresh air tube" is not a true Ram Air. For it to be Ram Air, the entire box that the filter is contained in must be sealed off completley except for the incoming rush of air from the front of the vehicle. It does provide a nice cool charge of cool air so it is effective. It just costs quite a bit of change.

I'll give a report in a couple weeks about the ram air thing.. I just picked up a good hood... I don't particularly care how it re-routes air to the air box through a channel- I would much rather see it old 'cowl' style- but this way there will be less concern for h20 and debris making it in there.. i reckon anyway...

Why would a CIA net better fuel mileage than the stock air box? The stock air box pulls cold air and has just as much volume. I checked the seed density fuel equation for the JTEC controller and adding more air would result in more fuel by extending injector pulse width. What you will do is drive the truck harder for awhile and enjoy the added power, then alter your driving style and that will improve your mileage. I am sure I am going to get flamed for this, but I bet I am right.

Stock air box doesn't flow nearly as well, and draws air from the fender well. The only openings to which come from the engine compartment. So, not exactly 'cold air'.

Aftermarket CAI systems draw air from the same spot, but, flow better than stock.

Cowl hood would be ambient temp air right on top of a 14X3 air cleaner. (so long as the truck is moving better than about 20 mph.....) cooler air is denser air. you get a better burn, so, slightly improved fuel economy/power. (all else being equal, including driving style.)
