There are many posts on here about this topic, but the most common complaints is oil usage, spark knock on acceleration. The easiest way to check is to take your air cleaner off and open the throttle blades and look down into the intake. If you see dark areas or oil build up, well theres your problem. If you do some searching on here you will find more detailed info about it.

^+1. Sometimes you can't see much through the butterflies on the TB. A lot of us recommend to take the throttle body off the manifold, and get yourself a dentist's mirror and flashlight, and look for any oil pools on the belly pan.

depends on how they wanna fix it. You can spend anywhere from 50, to 200 bucks on parts, and 0, to whatever 6-8 hours at going rate on labor. If you have some tools, and a place to work on it, you can do it yourself in a day, and save the cash on labor.

Just replacing the gasket is a temporary fix. Replacing the gasket and bolts, with some shorter ones, will last longer. The hughes or APS plenum plate/bolts, is a permanent fix.

If 10 mpg is a mix of highway and city that sounds about right for a good running truck.
