4wd not staying engaged

Did the t-case shift lever move, or did 4x4 just dis-engage?
If the t-case shift lever moved, I would guess mis-adjusted linkage (had an old Dakota that would do the same thing).
If the 4x4 light just went out (and you lost 4x4), but the t-case shift lever did not move (stayed at 4-Hi), then I am with HeyYou and would guess vacuum leak, or bad diaphragm.

most common problem with these is bad vac.
ensure that the red line at the cad has around 17" in 2wd and then when in 4wd the black line should have 17". if no vac is found, trace the lines all the way up to the passenger side of the manifold, somewhere in there you will likely find your problem, if not a new t-case switch is in order

The range fork or something else inside the TC is bad, you may have simply broken the snap ring, in which case one of these might fix your problem. http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...ase_saver.html
I wouldn't wait too long to try it, if it is the problem, other bad things are going to happen to the case.
