knocking,pinging sound???
Ok,i just changed out my water pump..i flushed it before i changed it..i changed thermostat...i drained the water out of the radiator..started to rain,so i covered everything up with a blanket and shut the hood....It has been in the 20' up to the high 40's here..I came back about 3 weeks and finished the job..when i went to start my p/u. it didnt want to turn over. it turned over about 4 times and locked up,so i kept trying and trying until my starter started smoking..i let it rest for awhile and tried it again, finally got it started. but now i have a knocking sound under the hood. it sounded like it was coming from the pass. side. So i took off the valve cover on that side, everything looks fine. But now the knocking, sounds like it is coming from under the intake.Im lost i have no idea where to start looking now or where to go. Any ideas....
I have a 98 dodge ram 4wd, 318 mag..Thanks for any help and replies..

the fact that you smoked the starter trying to get it to crank sounds bad it may be possible that you have a coolant leak into a cylinder or fuel leak into a cylinder that may have hydro locked the motor .cranking it to the point of smokin the starter may have damaged a bearing or rod .try using a long screwdriver held to your ear and touch it to diffrent areas on the motor to pinpoint the general area of the knock .also if you flushed the cooling system and did not drain the block you could possibly have cracked a cylinder if the temps have been in the 20s.a lot of water stays in the block even if you had the bottom hose off you still have more than a gal of fluid in the motor.pressure test your cooling system .check your plugs for coolant or excessive fuel/oil,check your oil for coolant .you can also connect your radiator pressure tester and run the motor briefly to see if it builds excessive pressure quickly ,this will tell you if your leaking compression gas into the cooling system
