Question Removing the shifter **** on a 98 1500 automatic

How would you go about removing the shifter **** on my 1998 1500 automatic shifter? I was thinking of replacing it with something a bit nicer.

You have to take some vice grips and crunch it and then pull it off. It doesn't unscrew like you think it would.

edit- nevermind I see you have a 98 with the O/D on/off button on the shifter, hopefully someone will chime in that has messed with a 98 or newer column shifter.

Is this your shifter ****?

I had to pull mine apart to get the o/d button cleaned out and actually cracked the **** a little. From what I remember its pressed on there (may have a little adhesive?) so just work it gently (which I didn't) and pull it out straight to avoid cracking. The wiring is wound up in there and there is enough to pull it clear of the lever.

Found this thread will searching for an answer to this same issue some years later - unfortunately. Figured I would post what I discovered over several searches. The end with the OD button was not made to replace. The complete automatic shift handle assembly can be purchased (Mopar Replacement 4690522AB); however, once you get the steering column shroud off you find the handle has a pressed in pin that holds it in place. Ordered a door hinge removal tool (Eastwood Door Hinge Pin Puller Removal Tool Kit). The new handle assembly comes with everything needed. Easy job once you get the part and the pin removal tool.

Yep, but still valid for those looking for this topic. Finding a solution has not been easy

I seriously doubt the part is still available. Possibly in the NS1 network, if Chrysler still uses thta.

Thank you. I am doing this right now, and this is the information I needed. Doing a complete restore of a junkyard truck.
