Default Tranny "THUNK" when I put it into reverse

Looks like most that have issues with tranny shifting into reverse experience a hum or whine. I don't. It goes in with no problem every time, but 99% of the time it is a loud THUNK! I mean it shifts hard! Fluid is good and level is good. What else could it be?

Also, I have the tranny thunk back and forth when at highway speed and at the lower end of the power zone and it needs to downshift. Like it doesn't want to downshift. I quick stomp on the throttle and it downshifts just fine.

I don't know if the two issues are related or not.

Before you start thinking of internal problems, I would check the u-joints and trans mount. A failing joint or a loose mount will also cause a clunk and that's something that is quick and easy to check.

I have tried to spin driveshaft by hand. There is absolutely no play. That was my first guess as well. Tranny mount. Hmmmmm. There is a thought.

Does it make any difference if the truck is hot or cold?

Louder when cold, yes. But the thunk is ALWAYS there.

I read through all the 2010 posts on "reverse." Didn't think to read back through 2009. LOL

So I guess it is just another "Dodge Thing." Man, I love the blessing that this truck is to my family.

Might wanna check the output shaft snap ring on the t-case as well. That is another common problem, and leads to munched up transfer cases.

The thunk when putting it in reverse isn't there when the transmission is new or rebuilt but over time it'll get louder and louder.
It's a Dodge thing and it's normal.

About the transmission mount, just get under there and poke it. It should be firm.
Mine was bad on my camaro and the transmission would slap the floor when I stomped on it. When I got under there and checked it out I saw that the mount had the consistency of a gummy bear.
