anything over 10 pounds at idle, when fully warmed, is 'acceptable'.... from there, about 10 PSI per 1000 RPM is standard. If it peaks around 40 pounds or so, that's fine.

shouldn't my Chilton repair manual say recommended PSI levels of the oil?? I can't seem to find it in the book

nope. It won't tell you. That is one of those things the manufacturers rarely give hard and fast numbers on.

Ok guys, got the mechanical gauge on no problem, but when I went to start the truck it wouldnt turn over so I popped the hood and saw a small amount of smoke leaking from the air filter housing, I took off the air filter housing and more smoke poured out from it. This is what I found, I assume the black isn't good... but I dont know what would have caused it to smoke. http://twitpic.com/3r0aja

mine only does this when it's low on oil. I'm sure you checked this though. right?
