97 5.9 cam suggestions?
hey guys !
quick run down first time on here I have some questions im not an advanced tech but I can break down the motor pretty well.
I can hear a tick sound coming from back cylinder which i believe is #8 now i said **** it time for some new heads called a shop they want around $600 to do everything that's just putting in stock oem everything I was looking up camshaft kits you know since im already there, now I'm not trying to go fast I just want it to sounds really good so more for show. im not a camshaft expert and i don't really know sizes but i know my stock i just want something to beef up the sound without having to change every part right and left to make it fit something in budget preferably
stock:
intake duration:249
Exhaust duration : 269
intake lift : .410
exhaust duration : .417
questions ..... do i already have the 1.7 rockers? what sizes camshaft could i put in that will still fit the rockers and what kind of push rods? just steel or something better? i was looking at summit racing and the kit i was looking at is called a comp cam? model # k20--223-2 xtreme energy cam and lifter kits ( hydraulic flat tappet lifters)
intake duration:268
exhaust duration:280
intake lift:.477
exhaust duration:.480
its a kit that comes with camshaft, valve seals, flat tappet lifters springs bolts timing chain and gears
https://www.summitracing.com/search/...-size/5-9l-360
i already installed edelbrock exhaust headers and a super 44 muffler also already fuel injectors and i was looking at high volume oil pumps and water pumps along with a better thermostat
any suggestions would be awesome and if you have a kit that has everything a link would be awesome i don't want to go super expensive so my budget on a camshaft kit is about $500-$600
also my truck is a 98 dodge ram 1500 ss/t 5.9 360
it has 187,000 miles and needs some love its a work in progress

Stock rockers are 1.6 ratio. max lift on stock springs is .480.
Biggest problem with changing the cam, is clueing in the PCM that things are different...... which means a custom tune... so, 500 to 600 dollars JUST for the tune, and the tuner.
Also, if you want that 'lumpy' idle, that will require a cam that just sucks for use in a truck....... the power band moves up the RPM range a good distance, and the stock intake just doesn't support it, so you are likely to actually LOSE power/driveability. It's a truck, it was never designed to go fast.... you want low end grunt, not top end power. (which is what the lumpy cams are designed for.....)
If you want a bump in power, going to full roller 1.7 ratio rockers will give you around 10hp/tq across the board. (for around 400 bucks or so.) Those are a direct bolt in.
