Need Advice whether to buy or not
Well I passed up on that one. But i found a new one. Its a 1997 5.9l v8 4x4 3inch lift with 33's the kid wants 3500 with 182k on it. But i had it looked at and the tranny is slipping and transfer case has issues. How much would be a good offer, and how much would i be looking to spend for a new tranny and transfer?
You can spend 3 grand on the trans very easily. (of course, that is a very well built trans, that you should never have trouble with.) Transfer case might be as easy as a snap ring...... they are famous for that. Replacements tcase should be easy to find in the yards too for that matter, couple hundred bucks.
Point out the problems to him, note that it will cost at least 1200 bucks for a trans rebuild, couple hundred more (if not a grand.... if you go new) for the case, offer him 1500.

Okay, sounds good. Thanks, yeah i really like this truck its a real good looking truck but like i said i took it down to my shop and had them look at it and they found the t-case,and tranny prob right away. But i mean cmon it has 182k that was at least to be expected.
I don't think you want larger tires... and if you do, I'll trade you some 35s with great tread left on the pro comps- with wheels for your wheels and tires.
35s are a hair on the big side for the 3.55 rear end.
I was planning on downgrading to 33s.
If the trans is actually SLIPPING and you have transfer case issues, I think you should walk away. there are plenty of trucks in better condition, even if you have to spend 4500 which will be better in the long run.
And I dont know where people are getting the 1200 number from... the cheapest quote for a rebuild for me was 1800-2200 and I checked several places in the midwest.
In the best case scenario, it would just be a band adjustment, but theres not a real shortage of 5.9s out there in better condition.

you should be able to buy ANY used vehicle from a dealer "around" the trade in price. Dealerships are happy to get 500-1000 off a trade in if it means they can sell it quickly. The last thing they want is to keep it on the lot. Then the dealership keeps paying INTEREST every month on some used vehicle.
Look up the trade in value and see if you can get it around 500-800 dollars over the trade in value. That would be a fair price.
For a truck that old, the dealership would want to sell it fast.
I paid 10K for my 2001 off road in 2008. It still had the dodge extended warranty and it had only 42K miles on it. 10K was a steal for that price (with warranty), but I got it from a 3rd party. All it cost was 50 dollars to switch the warranty to my name. 100 dollar deductible...not bad. Especially when you use that deductible to fix a cracked transfer case and a blown power steering pump.

Damn you I was gonna make a smartass comment about the leather windows
I agree with you, and for once I agree with your cocky attitude that you said it all in
Uh, bull ****in ****. Straight up bull****. If this actually happened, (which I know it didn't) where did this make news? Surely a truck that does 2/3 the speed of Shockwave would have made news. Also, what tires, bearings, axles and hubs were you using? Tell me about the brakes and the fuel delivery.
If you're smart you wont be back.

So I had the tranny and t-case looked at by Certified Transmission here in Lincoln and they found nothing wrong with the Tranny just some codes, and than with the T-case it has a bunch of lines that need to be replaced. So with that being said what would be a reasonable offer?
