As some of your know my truck with the 46re has been giving me jerky shifting since i bought it. The 2nd to 3rd upshift feals like its being tugged on like someone is yanking me a little bit like it jerks basicly.

Ok i checked band adjustment on (this website wont let me link the link) WTF ??? Well i found the link on a forum called dodge owner .com

According to this link it says if the front band is adjusted too tight then the vehicle will buck during shifts, when shifting to 3rd gear the 2nd gear releases and and the first gear grabs the transmission while 3rd gear engages. If the the 2nd gear doesnt disengage like its suppose too the transmission will bind when it shifts to 3rd gear and cause more wear on the transmission then is necessary

Im wondering if this is what is happening to me, because the jerk does feal like the Jeep is bucking or binding. When it shifts to 3rd gear the whole Jeep feals like its being tugged on. I read the whole thing and it seems easy to do, get the right tools and loosen the locknut 3-5 times and tighten the adjustment screw to 72in lbs then back off 2 7/8 turns. However it seems my transmission is acting like its too tight already. How would you loosen that instead of tightening it even more ? I dont understand what the point of tightening this to 72in lbs is going to do if im having the symptoms described in the link about the band being too tight.


I dont want to wear this transmission out by keep driving it like this. Asside from not changing the gov soleniod and sensors yet in the pan this seems like the next step i can try since the front band is outside the pan and i have already replaced sensors, and adjusted the tv cable a billion times at no avail

So im wondering what do you guys think I should do ?

 

That's the correct procedure. If the band is too tight now, performing the procedure will loosen it.

 

too tight is just as bad as a slipping band. it is not tough to do as long as ytou know how.

 

Do i have to do the other band also thats in the pan ? Or can i just adjust the front band on the outside. The front band is the one that controls the 2-3 upshift so i was told and thats where my problem is. Oh and does anyone know what wrench and fitting i need to do this with ? The wrench in the guide i cant find on google C-3380-A Torque Wrench nothing pops up

 

i would do both bands if it was me. if 1 is too tight then i suspect the other one is too. all you need is a inch pound torque wrench. most 1/4 drive torque wrenchs are "inch pound".

 

So any inch lbs torque wrench will work ? Oh and when it says to back out 2 7/8 turns. How do you do that exactly ? Do you just mark where the fitting is and turn it twice and 7/8. Im thinking that seems kinda hard to guess how many complete turns you do. I mean the 2 turns is obvious but how do you figure in 7/8 in a circle ?

 

To get 7/8's think of a clock. If you start at 12 o'clock and turn counter clockwise, end up in the middle of 3 o'clock and 12 o'clock. IMO you should drop the pan and adjust the rear band also. If it's the same as mine, it took a t-20 star socket for the front and a 5/16" eight point for the rear.

 

That would be one eighth of a turn. You want to end up halfway between 9, and 12.

 

If you turn clockwise it's 1/8", I said counter clockwise, since you have to back the bolt off after setting 72 inch pounds.

 

I strongly recommend the OP takes it to a tranny shop and have them perform the procedure.
