Default turbo on a 1500 series ram

Hi im new at this forum. I chose to turn to the experts and die hards of the mopar world. I Have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 5.9l gas truck. I would like to see whats involved in putting a turbo in this truck for the least amount of dollars spent? any suggestions or links would be appreciated

Turbo's aren't a cheap or easy install on these trucks. There are no 'bolt on' kits. You will have to custom make pretty much everything, plus get a different map sensor, and have a custom tune written for the turbo. (which is probably already available.... Hemifever could more than likely help ya on that.)

Look at spending a couple grand at least to make it run right.

Turbo could be tons of work for the truck, considering they don't make kits. You will have to be damn good at custom fabrication, or know someone that does that kind of work on ram's.

That being said, I think you are better off buying a used supercharger setup. It would also be wise to build the motor for lower compression, and forged rods/pistons.

You get this idea from the guy who has the turbod 2nd gen on youtube? Cuz youre better off spendin that much money on everything else for your truck than a turbo. And if you wanna do somethin like that get a hemi and get it supercharged. or get a bitch *** ricer car. haha!

I do know of one twin trubo bolt-on kit for the 5.2l and 5.9l made by SD Concepts but its like 5+grand. i would you use that money to do other mods rather then a turbo

Here are the facts:

Marty at the old "KRC"
STOCK 5.9: 4 PSI remote mounted turbo dyno WITH KEGGER!!!
1. about 2600 for the universal kit, includes FMS 60# injectors and tune. Plus 3-400 for the work from your local exhaust shop.
2. 4SPI gets you 308 HB and 353 HB and torque REAR WHEEL
3. 10 PSI gets you 408 HB and 503 tq rear wheel

I wanted to get this kit. I think I could get 350 375 with my mods and some new heads

However, i would need to buy head studs with boost, and a 2 bar map. So we are talking about 3500 all said and done.

AND THOSE ARE REMOTE MOUNT NUMBERS!!!

FWIW I have over $2500 in my turbo setup and a lot of time. It's all been worth it and I can't help but grin every time I drive my truck.

And FWIW, if the tune is good, the stock bottom end will hold well over 500WHP, stock heads will be restrictive though, and the stock headgaskets won't much like anything more than around 10PSI.

yep its all in the tune.new head gaskets are a must over 8psi stock likes to squeeze out and ruin your day.
