Default 94-97 5,9 vs. 98-03 5.9

My dodge is 400 miles from reaching 200k. I found a friend with a 96 5.9 with 80k miles. I found out that the 96 5.9 has 15 less HP and 20 ft/lb of torque less that the 98+ models. Does anyone know why, and what are the main differences between both models.

Should I just take the 96 or look for a newer model? I want to go for the 408 build while I have a running engine in my truck, but I dont know how long it will last.

When did the 5.9s switch to FI over Carb?

Thanks for any info.

My guess is programming, and intake differences for the power discrepancy. If you put the older motor, with all your newer sensors and intake in, you probably won't notice a power difference. Consider, with 200K miles, it'd be a pretty safe bet that you are NOT making the same power you were when the truck was new.....

So far as I know, the differences are, but not limited to:

One coolant temp sensor on the newer one, instead of two.
Manifold center divider no longer present.

and that's about it.....

5.9's have been FI since the early 90's, late 80's.

Thanks for the info. I have a 5.2 318 in this truck. I plan on getting the M1 intake when I get the engine plus a comple tear down and rebuild. But in the meantime will my regular intake work. I installed the hughes plenum plate and did the kegger mod with a new temp sensor. What about the flex plate and I plan on getting a programmer from HF as soon as I can for it as well.

maybe due to the egr valve or center divider in the intake, not sure when they stpped doing that.

Well in 96 only the sst and indys got a new cat back exhast, now in 98 they got that new cat back exhaust which was 10hp

Now in 98 the 5.9 got a cam upgrade that's were the rest on the hp numbers came form

The cat upgrade in 98 was just to a higher-flow model, not cat-back.

Your right about the EGR valve in the older model. Couldnt that be eliminated with a PCM flash and a modern intake. I thought the difference between the intake were the temp sensors and the EGR at the back of the Intake manifold.

I had no idea about the cam upgrade but I plan on putting another cam and a new valvetrain.

96 will not have egr, and the exhaust was bigger and had a different cat setup so that could be all your difference in power

Stock intake will work fine.

M1 is a single plane manifold, so, expect some low-end grunt to be lost. Just how much depends a lot on what you do with your build.

Hughes Air Gap might be a better alternative, if you plan to work your truck. (towing, hauling, wheelin')

I am gonna go pay for the engine tomorrow. Pull it this weekend and bring it home. Im still not sure what I want to do. This truck is just a daily driver company furnishes work truck and my dad has a couple of HD Fords I can use to tow if necessary. What is the price difference between the M1 and Hughes air gap? What about flexplates do I need a new one or will the one off my 5.2 work.
