Exclamation Engine Missfire; Barely on the gas!

Hello, thanks in advance for the help! I have a Early-1995, OBD I, Dodge 1500, 5.2L, 4x4, Extended Cab. No Cat.

The Problem: Engine runs good at idle and when heavy on the gas, problem occures when barely giving the motor gas just to stay at a constant speed. As if i have water in fuel. (Slight missfire but noticable)

What I've Done: New Spark plugs (not bosch), Sparkplug Wires, Distributor Cap & Rotor, New Timing chain & Gears, and I have had timing checked and is dead on. I have sprayed vacuum lines with Carb Cleaner and found no leaks.

Any help would be appreciated!

Other Thoughts: Fuel Pump, Injectors, clogged rail idk what to do next.

Check and see if your plenum is blown.

Also, disconnect the O2 sensor, and see if it runs any better. (check engine light will come on.)

Can you check fuel pressure? (need a gauge)

Thanks for the reply,

I have tested the fuel pressure before and couldnt get a good reading. I will go up to autozone tomarrow and will test it agian for a more accurate reading.

As for the O2 Sensor, i will disconnect the cable tomarrow morning and see how that works. Should I disconnect the one where the cat used to be and the one closer to the engine?

Also: If the plenum was blown wouldnt it skip alot worse and even not run?Everything runs great as long as i am at idle or flooring it.

Depends on how bad the plenum is. Mine was REALLY bad..... but, I would only get a miss due to plugs fouling out. O2 sensor will compensate to an extent for the vacuum leak.

It was skipping even immediately after i put the new spark plugs in, but cant hurt to check them to see how they look now after a week or so. I will do all the things you've said and will be back this evening to post my findings.

Thanks agian

How's your coil? Do you get a nice fat blue spark at the plugs?

Get a scanner and check the feeds from the sensors. I had an issue where the coolant temp sensor broke, and would cause pinging under almost any amount of throttle. You'll need a way to see the sensor data to know what's out of spec.

Of sound to me like its possibly an O2 sensor issue. At WOT, and on a cold engine, the O2 is of ignored when calculating fuel trims. After the engine warns up, the O2 , sensor controls fuel trims from idle and partial throttle situations.

You know it didn't start skipping.missfiring till I heard a tinging/rattling noise when i would stop, turned out to be the CAT so I cut it off. The muffler person that cut it off for me bult a Y and put my sensor back in right where my pips come together.

Also: B4 I had it cut off, i wanted to make sure the engine would run right if i took the sensor out, so i unscrewed it (not unplug cable) and left it dangling next to cat, no check engine light or anything. So I had them remove it and just drill another hole where the Y pipe comes together. In hope that it was skipping due to a bad CAT being clogged up.

If it is my o2 sensor do i need to unplug both of them at the same time?

Will that make it stop? or will i need to buy new o2 sensors before i know that is the problem? (do i need to put a cat back on if i go that route?)

Just went out and decided to check my codes before the drive home, it gave me a code 17. keep in mind my check engine light is not or has ever been on.

Code 17 - Closed loop temp not reached or engine cold too long

Could that be what is causing all of this? I wouldnt think so..
