Our gauges aren't known for being the most accurate. It could be the gauge but at 260k it wouldn't hurt to change the oil pump. It'll cost like 75 bucks. The pump is around 30, oil pan gasket is 30, and oil and filter. At least then you know it's not the pump. If you change it make sure you prime it first.

My oil gauge does it too. Theres obviously less oil pressure when idling than when at full throttle. There will be fluctuation with the needle.

In 60 years of owning and driving vehicles I've never had one that the oil pressure wasn't lower at idle that at 1000 RPM or more.

Yes. You most certainly do. Its a pretty easy job though, and you get to lay down the whole time. Took me about 2 hours to drop the pan, and change the pump the first time....

i understand that the pressure changes as the RPM's do but when my truck went from 40 at speed and 0 at idle it was the main bearings getting eat up. when you drop the oil pan you really need to go through the oil you drained out and the sludge that is built up in you pan and see if you find any METAL AT ALL. if you have some then it is time for a rebuilt. sorry for the bad news but a rebuild is cheaper than a new truck.

well i figure when i do infact drop the pan ill be:
cleaning out the oil pan of all sludge
cleaning and rebuilding the pump (if its in working condition)
checking the pickup line
cleaning the "sump"
and checking for metal shavings

if i need to rebuild anything.. itll just take longer :P
but thats the benefit of working on my own vehicles
learning

Don't bother rebuilding the pump, if you are in there, replace it. If your engine is high mileage, (north of 100K) go for the high volume pump.
