ok i have a 95 ram 2500 5.9l 4x4 and it has 205,xxx miles on it. Ill try my best to explain whats going on here. ok it doesnt start first of all. it will crank and every so often it will sort of shutter and you can here air getting sucked in but the motor hasnt started yet. almost like it is about to start but it never will no matter how much you crank it. starting fluid wont get it started either. its like when its starting that its at such low rmp that it shakes the motor a little bit. sorry for the weak explination but its a very odd problem any insight would be appreciated greatly!

I also told that it could be because of a cracked flywheel

This is a shot in the dark, but try a new crank position sensor, or cam position sensor.

The crank sensor, when it goes, will produce a no start condition and theres no real valid way to test it that I've ever read about.

You could also be suffering from an ASD event in which the pcm is reading a fault on a critical sensor and shuts down the injectors and coil to keep the truck from firing.

The field service manual can tell you what all is affected when the asd circuit trips. It's on rm indys website in the tech section.

the engine has spark and there is gas up to the injectors. thing is i put a new tranny in it myself less then 1,000 miles ago and when doing that i had accidently broke the crankshaft position sensor so i put a new one in so it is brand new and i did think of that and it has already been checked. any other thoughts?

Where did you get your sensor from?

Our trucks REALLY dislike aftermarket sensors in critical locations. Crank sensor being one of those critical locations...... also, I absolutely REFUSE to use ANY Autozone electrical parts, after having them abandon me on the side of the road THREE times.

See if you can swap it out under warranty there, and if that solves the issue, buy one from the dealer. Yeah, they are more expensive, but, they have the advantage of: They Work.

Our trucks really hate any sensor other than the OEM ones in critical spots on our trucks. It doesn't get much more critical than the crankshaft position sensor.

EDIT: NINJA

did this problem begin with the trans install, or did it run fine for 1,000 miles and just start doing this?

also try pressing the gas pedal while cranking. that opens up the throttle body plate and bypasses the IAC motor/sensor thing, which if its not working - the truck won't start with no air.

the next test would be to check fuel pressure at the rail. the correct way to do it is with a gauge. should be 49 psi, +/-5. an alternative way to do it is to press the schreader valve thing. if it squirts gas into your eyeball with what feels like 49 psi, then its probably fine. don't smoke during this test.

next, check for spark at the plugs while cranking.

ok there is a way to check the cam sensor. get an volt owm meter and unplug the sensor. there should be three tabs. one is ground the other two are power and signel. there should me some kinda od reading between signel and ground and power and ground. if there is no or a neg reading the sensor is no good. also if your broke the sensor i would be checking to see if the wires are broke or if the new sensor is simply unpluged. i have seen that happen alot too.
