Cool Sputters After Engine Warm - I am Stumped!

98 RAM 1500, 318, 230,000 Miles

Runs great when first started, after about 15 miles and once it reaches tempreture it runs horrible and barley at all, will stall out wont want to restart. Lots of poping and backfire/misfire sounds, kicks, bucks...

Ugh...

OBD II shows:
P0138 - 02 Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2
P0320 - Ingnition, Distributor, Engine Speed Input Circuit
P1391 - Intermittent Loose of CMP or CKP

Emmisions Status is RED

Sounds like the O2 sensor(s) need to be replaced. They should be ~50-60k miles.

Changed the o2 sensor with a new one from Dodge/MOPAR.

Seemed to run good for a few minutes. Took it down the road, less than a mile later it died and I can not get it to restart.

Doesn't even try to fire.

P0320 - Ingnition, Distributor, Engine Speed Input Circuit
P1391 - Intermittent Loose of CMP or CKP

These two codes would prompt me to think the cranks sensor was going..... check the wiring first, if the wiring is good, might wanna replace the sensor.

Are you getting spark while cranking??

Would have to pull a plug and check for spark while cranking right? I'll check that ...

Where is the crank sensor located?

The wires and plugs are over a year old could that cause this? I had an explorer back in the day that would not start similar to this if it needed new wires.

You could prolly just check directly at the coil. Pull the coil wire off the dist, stick a spark plug into it, and ground it out somewhere. I am only interested in if the coil is firing at all.

Crank sensor is on the back of the engine, toward the passenger side. It reads off of the flexplate.... so, right in that neighborhood. It isn't the easiest part to find......

Dist cap would cause a no start. But, not even getting a sputter out of it indicates a problem further upstream.

Always drink upstream from the herd.

I think you figured out the problem!!!!

Pulled the coil wire off the distrubuter plugged a sparkplug into it had someone crank it over...

I may have seen 1 or 2 sparks here and there, then nothing.. It should spark several times a second.

ok, I take that back...

Got the new coil.... tested for spark, had spark. Connected to the distributer. Truck ran, not very well, but it ran. Got to operating temp and died. Would not restart. Tested for spark, none.

Something is causing it to not want to fire at tempreture. Would the cps cause that?

I was going to suggest checking the CKP earlier but the name of it escaped me. Pull it from the distributor, thoroughly clean it and inspect the pigtail for any work/broken insulation and also inspect the plate for any cracks or breaks. A magnifying glass may be required as microfractures can wreak havoc with its performance.
