Default Trying to fit a remote oil filter set-up....

Hi all--

Just had a brief question prior to fitting a remote engine oil filter setup to my 2001 Ram 1500 5.2L....

If anyone is doing an engine oil/filter change this weekend, would it be possible to measure and post (or PM me) the ID and OD of the oil filter sealing surface machined into the engine block? My truck is not due for an oil change for another 2000 miles, and I would hate to waste a filter and make a huge mess. Please see the attached photo for a visual of what I'm looking for.

I'm trying to make sure the adapter I'm using will seal properly. Making a huge mess is precisely the reason I'm installing the remote filter kit.

Anyway, hope someone can help me out--

Thanks!
Dave

Go to the WIX or other brands websites and you'll find filter specs. But, why are you doing this anyway?

I'm not after the filter specs. I have a Wix 51085 on my desk right now that I could measure. I'm after the dimensions of the filter seal mating surface on the 5.2L engine block.

I'm doing this because whenever you remove a filter, a gush (then stream) of hot oil drains down from the filter directly on some pointless bracket between the engine/transmission. The bracket seems to funnel the oil down between the transmission bellhousing and dust cover, which drips in my driveway for a week after each oil change. I guess the oil pools at the bottom of the bellhousing under the torque convertor.

Messy and pointless. It's a pity Chrysler didn't set the oil filter assembly up on these trucks like the 400s and 440s where the filter was positioned horizontally. I'm getting the remote kit for free, so I'm just trying to see if the adapter will fit.

Thanks!
Dave

Compare the sealing ring on your filter (take if off the filter for a really good look) to the sealing surface on the adapter. Should tell ya all ya need to know.

A piece of folded cardboard works fine. And now that I think about it, the drain plug is more of a mess than the filter, at least on a 4x4.

ive never had a probem with oil dripping onto that bracket, ever. a you gotta do is loosen the filter til the oil starts coming out a little bit and let it drain like that for a minute, after that take it off the rest of the way. no mess!

Thanks for the tips on preventing a mess.

As a general comment, though, I should say that I dislike having to explain my reasoning. Isn't it enough to say "I have a 10ish-year-old truck that I want to modify"? If a forum member needs help installing an aftermarket radio, does anyone say "Why would you ever want to do that? The factory radio is just fine for me!"

What works for another member may not be acceptable to me and vice-versa. I shouldn't have to justify my reasons for doing a mod simply because I do not appear to be an "experienced" forum member.

I guess I should only have said "I need the dimensions of the oil filter sealing surface on a 5.2L block" and left it at that. I kind of liked the one recent post on this forum where some guy was putting a crazy-high lift kit on his red Ram and basically said "If you don't like it, don't reply to my post!".

Sorry to digress/rant. This is not meant to start an argument, just voicing an opinion. I guess no one will answer my friggin' question now! Oh well.

Thanks!
Dave

alright, don't know if this will help but I have a 360 block in my garage and although I didn't measure it(there is the threaded deal in the way) I did just walk out there and take a good look. there is only like 2mm on the inside and outside of the mark where the oil filter seals. so take oil filter o-ring add 2mm to inside and outside diameter and there you have it.
