HV pump WILL require you to swap out the oil pump shaft.

yes you should replace the pump.
yes you should use the hi-vol.
i cheaped out on mine and ended up with slightly lower oil pressure than i originally had.
pay attention to the details on the rear main. there is an inside and outside which are different. don't get it backwards.

Pressure=resistance to flow. Increase flow with the same resistance and you will create more pressure.

I can only speak for me and mine.
I've had the melling HV pump in mine since 65,000 miles. It currently has 112,500 miles.
I did not use a hardened shaft. I just changed the camshaft last week and had the drive gear out, there was no wear.
I have a stock depth pan. I use 10w30 oil, and I fill it to the tip top. I have done about 50 wot runs up to 5200 rpms. I have never drained the sump to my knowledge, or the oil gauge's. I think this happens to guys that don't run their truck to operating temperature before driving at WOT.
Maybe I'm just lucky. Maybe you won't be, who knows.
