Default Tomorrow is the day!!!

Im fairly new to the forum and have just been lurking around on here doing alot of reading. Tomorrow I am going to pick up the new transfer case for the truck.

I have a few questions that i hope can be answered to make my day a little bit easier. First off I need to replace the u-joints on the rear driveshaft and they are like no other ones ive ever done. The snap rings holding them in all snapped and I am no longer able to get to them. Is there an easy way to do this myself or am i better off taking it to a shop and having them do it? Another problem I need to address is that when removing the rear driveshaft I had to cut one of the bolts that hold it to the rear pinion and am now faced with trying to remove that. Is there a simple way to do this or is my best bet trying to use an easy out to remove it? Also is it ok to just leave the front driveshaft out since the front gears are not the same? Just wanna make sure it wont hurt anything.

Thanks guys.

Welcome to DF. Can't help with specifics on oyour situation, but a few suggestions. Photos would help everyone see what the situation is a little better. Title of posting that reflects the problem or question would most likely attract users that are knowledgeable on the issues you raise. (I juslt like to read everything because there is no telling waht I might find - but others may only read something that peeks their interest or their expertise. Just suggestions....

Also, there is FSM in the DIY section that may provide some help as well.

Thank you. I will have to post up some pictures of everything tomorrow before i make the trip to go pick up the new TC. Its only me doing the work and I will take any advice I can get to make my day a little bit easier. Thanks for your reply and I will have to check out the DIY section now and see if that helps with any of my problems

Ive never had any problems with a u-joint strap bolt... if its not gonna come out easy try throwing some heat at it then using that easy out.
If you can get one side of the u-joint itself free of the problematic clips the other side will be easier with a little room to work with.
Also you will not hurt anything by leaving the front driveshaft out. Its better that way since the gears dont match.

Its not the actual strap bolt that I am having problems with. I will snap pictures now and post them so everyone can see what I am dealing with. As for the u-joints i guess my best bet would be a good vice and a BFH and some heat possibly?

You need to get those clips out if you can, try using a small cold chisel to get them out. I have pressed out cross joints with the clips still on; but it took a press to do it, it might be just as easy for a shop to do this for you. Is there any of the bolt left sticking out at all? if yes a little heat and some type of penetrating oil and it should come out, if not drill and easy out it is. Yes you can leave the driveshaft out, it will not hurt anything.

Well i took another look at the u-joints and i still have a side with the clip intact so im not to worried about that. Now i just gotta figure out this bolt.

It appears to be sticking out plenty far enough to heat up and remove.

I hope so. I will try heating it and see how that works for me. After the new TC is in and all buttoned up its onto my next issue. It has been over a month since Ive been able to drive the truck so im hoping that my next issue is resolved quickly and wont cost much. Not sure were to even start though! Thanks for the replies guys

Just to be sure - you know you need to heat the flange and not the bolt, right? Heating bolt will make it expand and get tighter. Not trying to be a smart a** but some people do not realize this.
