Not wanting to spend your money, I still say yes. I've seen to many time's any kind of bearing or even ujoint for that matter check out ok.(without stress/load on it) Only to replace it and solve the problem.

And btw, you can eliminate it altogether and put a regular drive shaft in.

OK, why would you ask that? To make me look stupid? LOL I bet it's because you have a 3500 right? Of course you have no info about your truck in your sig or profile. Doesn't matter, I assumed it was a 1500, and some early models had a 2 piece shaft that is replaceable with a one piece even from the dealer.

yep 3500. how much backlash should the rear diff have? dana 80? anyone know?

Not off hand, but if you look in the manual from the FAQ section I bet you'll find that info.
