HI to all - fairly new to the forum - have a question about my 2001 1500 2wd 5.2 46re transmission. Have been having many shifting problems - probably already know what the answer is but wanted to run it by all the experts. Trans began hanging up between shifts and sometimes had to manually shift it up and down to get the next gear. First I took the governor solenoid out and the screen was plugged - cleaned it and put it back in - also adjusted the bands. All was fine for a few weeks - then started again - removed pan and replaced governor solenoid (screen was clean) and transducer - again all was fine for a few weeks. Now - the trans is shifting from first to third (completely skipping second) and occasionally hanging up in first gear - again if I move the shifter up and down - it will shift. Any ideas ? (other than a complete rebuild.) Thanks a lot.

 

Did you check band adjustment? Check fluid level in neutral?

 

Check TV cable adjustment?

Didn't find anything odd in the trans pan did you?

 

Thanks for the replies - cable adjustment is good - fluid level is good - band adjustment was way out but has been adjusted (the only thing is that when it is adjusted properly the adjustment screw is barely sticking out of the locknut). I assume this means the band is worn but the band seems to be operating : can't see and scoring on the drum it rides on. Oh - quite a bit of trash on the magnet both times the pan was removed. Thanks again - (also forgot : the truck now has 179k on it).

 

Just black sludgy stuff? Or metal shavings on the magnet?

 

Appears to be black sludgy stuff but it does stick to the magnet. When I wipe it off it appears to be just gooey black stuff. Definately no large pieces or chunks of metal on magnet or in pan.

 

Ok, that's a reasonably good sign. I would re-check the band adjustments..... also make sure the filter isn't plugged. Might have a sticking valve in the valve body too for that matter.... 180K.... might wanna start saving for a rebuild.

 

I adjusted the band when I had it apart and replaced the solenoid and transducer : my concern was that the adjustment screw/bolt on the front band was about flush with the outside edge of the locknut after the adjustment. I assume this means the front band is well worn but should still apply. I'm also pretty sure that if the front band does not apply - this could cause me to not have second gear - which is the situation now. Does anyone know how I can check to see if the band is trying to apply or possibly something is causing it to not apply ? Thanks again.

 

Screw a pressure gauge into the correct port, and see what it says when you should be in second gear....

 

I will try a pressure reading this weekend but according to my repair manual, at first glance, it looks like the reading you get with the truck in 2nd. gear would - if the pressure reading was off - negatively impact some other gear or shift point. In other words - I think all you check in 2nd. gear is the accumulator pressure which I think would mess some other point up if it was off. But still checking - does anyone know if this is true ?
