Default trans problem

Hello everyone,

I'm having problems with my trans. I have a 97 dodge 2500 5.9 with 96,000 miles and with either a 47re or 48re trans. ( i forget what dealer said) It started when i hooked up my trailer 3,000lbs and noticed it was slipping. I did a service filter and fluid and added lucus. No more slipping shifts good. Now it seeps to be shifting hard so i took it to 2 trans shops to have it looked at. He said had no codes and smelled good and nothing in the pan. They test drove it and could not duplicate my problem. No when i pull in my driveway it will shift from 1st to 2nd fine but no power at all in 2nd i have to manually put it back into 1st. only under a load and with trailer. I had a few people talk about adjusting a band? Just wanted to get everyone's opinion.

Also me speedometer is 8mph faster then the truck. Has stock rims and tires. No mods. I was told try speed sensor first that could cause shirting problems. Again no pending or current codes. Thanks a lot

Isn't there a Vehicle Speed Sensor on the back of the transmission that would give you those symptoms? Might want to check that too.

Might try looking in that link to get more info.

Good luck!

97 should have a gear driven VSS in the back of the trans, or, output housing on the t-case. Might be as simple as a gear change there.

Would that be the 5.9 diesel?

That would be nice to know, because if it 's a gasser, I know at least where I'm going with this.

In that case, you have a 46RE tranny. And as far as power loss goes, I suggest you read the plenum sticky on top of the page(and address that issue), before trying to diagnose a tranny problem you may not have.

You might have a Governor Solenoid problem too. But, I think you should check the plenum and cat first.

I looked in the intake and there is no oil. It is a little dirty so i just did the seafoam treatment through the brake booster hose. Any other signs of that gasket needing replaced? Runs really good with no trailer. Maybe just a good tune up? back on the trans the first shop road around with a computer and said its about 10psi lower then should be but he wasn't worried about it. Any thought on that? Thanks a lot
