Default SCT & mods?

I have been lookin into getting an SCT tuner from hemifever. I have done a lot of searching around and read a lot of good things about it. I am still a little iffy though..

I have a 1997 Ram w/ 5.2 V8. It has come a long ways since i bought it.
-Plenum repair
-New water pump, timing chain, etc..
-New tps, o2 sensor, catalytic converter
-Flowmaster super 40
-K&N cold air intake

These are the only things that have been done to it. The truck has 198x miles on the original motor and original tranny (praying they both keep going as well as they have lol). Anyways, the big question is what can i expect from the SCT tuner? I plan to run it on 87 tune cause thats the kinda gas i put in it. I read that people say it performs way better with other mods..? Im not sure so im looking for a little help before i spend $275. Oh yeah, 265/75/16 tires and im getting about 12mpg city. Can i expect to see any improvement in that?

Thanks for any input.

Joey

It runs great with an off-road y-pipe, the factory y's in the trucks are terrible.
You will also need a full tune up and a 180* t-stat and maybe cooler plugs. Most can only run the 87 tune on 89 gas, which really isn't that bad.
The SCT will remove the torque management Dodge put in place to "save" the transmissions. Speaking of which, service your trans. Change the fluid, filter and adjust the bands. Just don't do a flush, especially a chemical flush. You will kill the trans.

Maybe that will get you started.

after you adress the y pipe get some headers, shorties are better than stock and longtubes are better than shorties. and if you get long tubes the y will have to be replaced anyways

They can be fun.... hardest part is hooking up the rest of the exhaust. That is gonna require some custom work. Get to be friends with some of the guys that work at the local muffler shop.

I recently got a SCT for my 5.2L, it makes a little difference. Mine is running the 91 tune. I am getting ready to install a off road Y pipe this week. All in all id say it's worth it especially if you plan to keep the truck and mod it.

Its 365called if you get custom tunes, you only need those if you get some serious engine work done

If you dont plan on doing heads, cam, or stroking it the custom tunes are not worth it.
