Default hard to start, hard to keep running...

Hey, All! I just joined the forums today because I'm having a problem with my 2001, Dodge 1500 P/U, 318-cu. in. engine.
The problem started suddenly, yesterday evening. When I turn the key to start it, it's real sluggish starting. As if, the battery was low (which it isn't). It will start then quits. After a couple attempts and giving it enough gas at the right time, it will stay running. Maintaining 1000-rpm's till it's warm enough, it will run just great.
I don't have a clue what the problem could be so, I thought I would come here for help. I'd hate to take it to a mechanic without some idea where he might start.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I would check IAC and TPS. Also check the ground cables. Good battery should not have sluggish cranking.

Does it maintain the idle at 1000 itself, or do you have to do it?

I have to keep pressure on the gas pedal till it gets 'warmed-up'. I cleaned the battery connections and ground wire from the battery... still sluggish. This pick-up has had a 'surging' problem. I tried changing the TPS but the new one didn't work. I would try to start it and it would immediately die. I put the old TPS back on the throttle body and the problem went away. It's been running great but this new problem came-up suddenly.

Yank the throttle body, pull the IAC out, and clean everything really well. (disconnect battery while doing so.) Put it back together, and see if that doesn't improve it's attitude.

I'll try it! Thanks. Would that have anything to the starter 'dragging', even with a fully charged battery?

Could be a bad starter as well, which means the contacts have worn. Starters are easy to rebuild and new contacts plus a new plunger would be less than $25 from Nations Starter & Alternator.
