'01 ram 1500 5.9 4x4. Truck will not move. with transfer case in nuetral, trans. in gear, transfer case will grind going into gear, which makes me think the trans. is okay. Would the transfer case crap out all of a sudden? No warning, no noise. Started up from a stoplight got to 2nd gear and went into neutral. Any ideas?

 

If you put the truck in park, will it stay where you parked it? Can you push it around? If not, then the t-case is prolly OK.

Check fluid in the trans first, see what ya got. (check in neutral, park will give you an inaccurate reading.)

 

Maybe I'm reading the the OP,s question wrong but, how do you expect the truck to move if the transfer case is in neutral?

I don't know, flip the visor down and read the sticker maybe?

 

i think ive read that damn sticker at least 2 dozen times in the 2 years ive owned my truck just out of shear boredum.

 

I read it as the truck wont move when the TC is in neutral and the trans is in gear as well. I'm with you about reading my sticker a thousand times on the visor every time I get caught in road construction with a flag guy. Thank God for ipod touches with games!!!!

 

What I meant was if you put the transfer case in nuetral, and the trans. in gear, the transfer case gears grind if you try to engage it. With transfer case in any drive position and trans in any gear the truck doesn't move.

 

Just fluid pressure will spin things in the trans. That does not imply it doesn't have a problem. If the truck stays put when you put it in park, the t-case is not the problem.

 

Why are you putting the TC in neutral? Stop doing that!
