Default confused

Ok so i got my buddy a 2001 ram 1500 and when i put it on stands it will shift thru all 4 gears but going down the road it wont come out of 2nd gear any ideas?

Friction from the tires on the road.
Changed the fluid? Changed the diff fluid?

that will stop it from shifting on the road but not on stands?

Unplug the 8 pin connector behind the shift linkage on the trans, take the truck for a test drive. It will NOT have ANY automatic function. It should STAY in the gear you tell it to. (and no tcc either, i think....) If it shifts when you tell it to, and all the gears are there, drop the pan, and replace the governor pressure sensor and solenoid.

ok so the trans was fubar so pulled it then put a known good one in and shifts fine but now it stalls some times when i put it in reverse it revs up then down and has alot of spark knock (crank sensor maybe)?

Could be, did you remove it first and reinstall it after.?
