Question about oil
Okay so i have a question about synthetic oil.
Ive been wanting to run synthetic oil.....But one my of my dads friends told me that if i have never used it before and just used conventional oil, switching to synthetic might cause leaks?
is this true? i bought the truck with 119k on it and im not sure what the previous 2 owners ran through it (guessing just conventional) but i would reall like to start running synthetic or blend.

It's possible. If the engine wasn't as well maintained as it should have been... crud builds up around any place oil has a chance to escape the motor. Running synthetic can clear the crud, so, you get a leak......
I just run regular ol' dino oil. Change it at regular intervals. Engine will last a couple hundred thousand miles. Synthetic oil will not extend that number by much, certainly not enough to justify the cost. (at least, not to me.)

Synthetic oil will never CAUSE a leak, however because the individual molecules are uniform and smaller than that of conventional oil it can EXPOSE existing leaks that were not detectable with conventional oil. It also tends to have a stronger detergent additive base, so it can clear sludge that was "clogging" potential leaks.
You'll gain a tad of fuel economy with conventional oil (and by a tad I'm talking a fraction of a mile per gallon). Performance will increase but again probably only enough that a dyno could tell. I use a 100% full synthetic and have for 20 years, extend my change intervals to 6000 miles to justify the cost. Synthetics float contaminants better and don't saturate as fast, so you can tend to get by with longer change intervals, provided you use a good quality filter.
Personally, I don't think there is a major difference as far as engine longevity is concerned if using conventional oil and changing at 3000 miles or a synthetic and changing it at 6000 and the cost will probably work out to be about the same.

i don't see anything wrong with just using the normal oil. my dad ran it in all of his vehicle and some of them have had more than 500,000km and they still had the power to burn rubber even though my dad never quite maintained his vehicles properly. his last dodge truck never had a oil change the entire time he had it, just kept it topped up.
That's more a factor of regular maintenance than what type of oil you run.

i've run amsoil and mobil one. ran amsoil in a jeep grand cherokee with a 5.2v8 like our trucks, changed oil every 25,000 miles sold the jeep when it had 230,000 miles, no problems what so ever. been running mobil one in my 4x4 since day 1 change every 15,000 miles no problems as of yet. my 4x2 will be switched over to mobil one here shortly.
as for viscosities, I ran 15w-40 in the jeep, and i run 10w-30 in the 4x4, the 4x2 has a few more miles of it, so i am going to run 15w-50 in it (i think, havn't quite decided yet.)
