Zman, what do you think about that metal piece that requires NO cutting?
http://dieselmanor.com/dm_products/DM-TRS.asp

It says it only reads 5* cooler at 200*. I know people will say, "But the air temp will foul the reading." But air flows over the cooling line as well.

With zero cutting, I would get that gadget. Mainly because I would mess something up and my truck is still under warranty. But I have mine in the pan. I might get a second tranny gauge for inline.

I would think that one could wrap it with something to insulate the unit and even reudce the 5 degree loss. It would then only be a function of a snug fit to the transmission line.

Actually, no I'm not.. I'm just going to solder a temperature probe to the line and insulate it.. what's the difference?

That should work also. Used to do that on equipment we were field testing (cranes and such). Usually used JB weld.

Or you could do what I did ...... thread one into a Derale tranny pan

I'd put it in the pan before using one of those. But really, having anything is better than nothing. If there is a problem, the temp is going to shoot up and you'll know it no matter what you use. Only thing with clamping it on is, moisture can get between and the line will rust.

Boy, I would be skeptical if that thing would really give anywhere near accurate reading. I think the one zman had mentioned before would be alot better.

I especially wouldn't use the clamp on any where there is salt used on the roads in the winter.
