A buddy of mine had one of those older Unidens, I thought it had 66 in the name not 68. He was able to swap in some better output stage pills and improve send power dramatically. I can't remember the exact power output but IIRC it was around 50W. That might be what was done to yours. There is no way to get to 50W without changing out parts. Maybe 10 -15W through peak and tweak but not 50W.

Back in the late 70's when the, "CB" rage was at it's peak, my brother and I were the first in our town to get SSB (Single Side Band) radios. They were either Midlands or Unidens can't remember now. We loved them because nobody else could listen to our conversations when we went to either the upper or lower band. Kinda surprised not to have them mentioned. They also transmitted/received farther than an AM radio and legally. Of course we both had illegal 50 watt, "kickers" on them and could transmit/receive out to 30 miles all day long. We used to CQ with them all the time. When the conditions were right I talked to guys all over the states even Alaska one day.

How would you mod cb radios to increase the wattage? I heard they make amps for them but where would you find them at?

you take the CB to a CB shop (not a truck stop or store that sells cb's and other things, but a shop that specializes in CB's and CB repair) and have them modify it to increase the wattage. usually takes them an hour, they open it up and replace some parts on the circuit board by unsoldering and soldering in new components.

its not something that you just plug in... usually costs about $20-30 to have it modified.

also it depends on what brand the CB is for how much they can bump it up in wattage.

cobras can go a max of 23-24watts. think uniden can go 50watts.

you also need special meters to calibrate and tune the radio once modified, so its not really something an end user can do...an electronics expert could probably do it with the proper meters and a guide.

A TSB is a "Technical Service Bulletin". Search them for your year and make to see if you have any for radio TSB's out there. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/alldata.php

Yes it was modified with different parts.

Go to a truck stop around you and ask someone there for a CB Shop.
