That's the factory cooler most likely. Does it have steel lines running to it like these in the red outline?

Sure is. Odds are the tranny was not worked on. If it was(which you don't know now).
I agree with what kejobe said in the event it may have been rebuilt. But somehow I'm thinking that is not the case. Unless of course there was a leak and the previous owner cut lines and replaced them with hose, unaware of the check valve.

No, and that is most likely not the problem. Depending on the climate where you live , too big will have too much cooling, and it won't want to shift into OD.

BTW, take pics. Save them to your desktop. Then go to Photobucket for instance. Register and upload pics to PB. Then click on the img. file to copy. Then when you reply here click paste.

Oh alright on the pics. I live in florida and it gets pretty damn hot here. I don't drive it all too much mostly to work and back, about 20 minutes each way. Other than that to the store here and there. So maybe not enough to need a cooler? I don't haul anything either

Then over cooling won't be a problem. No need to go overboard, but look and see if the check valve was removed. Figure out photobucket and take some pics. The lines going into the passenger side of the radiator for example.

The best thing you can do for your tranny is to install a temp gauge, if you decide to do so, use one of these for the sending unit.
