Default Trans kicking down too many gears...

When I am accelerating the tranny seems like it kicks down at least two gears and makes the engine over rev.....when pulling my trailer up a hill if you give it too much gas it just about red lines the engine and you gotta let off the gas.

Any ideas?

Do you have OD turned off when pulling trailer? If not, you should. Do not tow in OD.

I tow in with it off......this happens pulling or just driving....has always done this. When u kick into passing gear it drops more than one gear down and makes the engine over rev.

Under geared or course with 3:55's . But you have an under powered problem. Which leads to clogging cat, which leads to blown plenum. Have you read the plenum sticky? Probably not is my guess.

I think your problem is due to you being too lazy to shift your own gears

Is this something I can do or do I have to have a mechanic do it?

Dead easy. Grab the 01 service manual, if you haven't already, procedure is in there. Helps to have a second set of hands too....
