Default transfer case compatibility

I've been searching for a t-case for my 96 ram 1500.
I've been told I have to replace it with the same one.
231d. Is this true or are there any others that are compatible?
Is the np231 the same

Yea they are the same....i have a 231hd in my 1500 so i think either 231d or hd will work...i know the 241hd from the deisels/2500s are not a direct swap so just stick with 231

If you find a 241 from a 2500 with a v8 it will be a direct bolt in upgrade.

MAKE SURE you get one from a 94-97 truck (whether 231 or 241) because your '96 requires the speed sensor to be in the t-case tailhousing. the 98-02 2nd gens had an axle mounted sensor.

Another reason to stick with one from 94 to 97 is the shift pattern is different 98 and up.

The output shaft for a 46re, NV3500, or NV4500 Light Duty (v8 version) is a 23 spline shaft, whether it's a 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, or 1 ton.

Auto t-cases won't fit behind a manual, because they have a slightly longer input shaft, but manuals will be fine behind an auto. Either way, you could just swap the input from your original case to any dodge 231/241 and be safe.

ok so i got a 97 3/4 ton with a LD nv4500 and i got a 241DHD and im looking to swap in a 241DLD from a 95 3/4 ton with the auto trans. will that work with my trans or will the input shaft be different??? my tcase is shot. the chain is jumping and the splines i know on the front output shaft are ****ed up from plowing. so i cant imagine the rest of the internals are in any better shape. any info would be awesome... thanks

Should be the same. If the input is different, swap it. They will interchange, and it's easy.
