46RE to NV4500 transmission swap on 1996 Ram 1500
Alright guys! Thought I would make a thread here with pics of my tranny swap. Got a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 46RE automatic transmission with 231HD transfer case. I discovered while working under the truck on other things that my transfer case was cracked like an eggshell... Then about 4 days later I lost 2nd gear, and all other gears were terribly sluggish (they were slipping)... PCM set a bunch of codes for the tranny, so I thought it was time for a new tranny cause this auto is the original one with the truck and has 148K miles on it, of mostly towing, and no auxiliary tranny cooler, so no surprise it finally went... So gonna put a NV4500 in it with a much better transfer case (Probably a 241HD), and also going to replace front axle seals at the same time. I am going to post info and pictures as I work on this. Going to be interesting! Hope you'll be along for the ride!

That was one of the few "bling" expensive parts I splurged on when I overhauled my truck last spring.

IMO, a quality OEM style clutch should be fine, I had my last Valeo clutch in for 61k miles, it was holding about 430ft/lbs for 36k of that and only wore .015" worth of friction material. I only replaced it because I had the engine out and the current one is holding around 500ft/lbs.

So the tranny is gonna be ordered today, reman tranny with reman transfer case, and a used but inspected bellhousing that has warranty on it as well. Going to order it from man-trans.com.
