Default cummins swap?

i have a 98 2500 with the 360 and am wanting to drop in a 24v. it already has the nv4500 tranny and i think the rear end would hold it well enough, has anybody had experience doing these swaps? any tips before i start getting into it. would i be better off getting a motor out of a wrecked outfit or just getting a long block straight from dodge? i planned on putting a south bend clutch in it while i have it apart any other major components i should swap out?

Incase u were wondering why noone has responded, it is because we are tired of answering the same questions over and over and over and over. You get the point. There is 1 thread a day about this. Try searching and you should find some info.

yeah i already read all 17 pages of it, problem is i would like to drop in a 6BT not a 4BT, other part is the guy that did that one seams to have a pretty decent understanding of dodge diesels... i do not. what i did learn from that was i am going to have to change out my fuel pump and alter my fuel lines a bit, change my drive shaft length, and do some major screwing around with parts of the wiring harness and that i should be able to use my existing motor mount locations just with the cummins mounts. what it didn't tell me was if i will be able to use my existing dash, or what parts of the wire harness i will have to alter. thankfully it did have suggestions on what guages to add on the A pillar. all i have dealt with before for motor swaps have been carb gassers, no computer, no wiring harness, and nothing like a diesel. i know enough to guess that a 5.9 cummins wont run on the computer that a 5.9 gasser does. i also figured from one of the posts in there that when i do the swap i will have to have the 5th gear nut welded in my tranny or it will probably fly off.

now back to what i was origionally asking about before everyone assumed i was a complete idiot and assumed i didn't already try searching it

Why do you want to do the 24v? the early '98s were 12v and much simpler, more reliable, and more capable of big power...

A computer would still be nice, but not absolutely required.

Any questions about the differences I might be able to help a little more

EDIT: to help with the questions already listed... Rear end will probably be fine. Know which dana you have? And the nv4500 will need a torque converter.. could do the 5th gear nut fix while youre at it as well

Hahahaha my bad, Im switching through 4 different forums and mixed her up!

4500 shouldnt be that hard to swap over, probably just a bellhousing/clutch difference

EDIT: My title on cumminsforum is actually "drunk poster"... I often need double checked lol

i am not trying to push big power, 2wd and this truck has one purpose pulling a horse trailer, the gutless 360 in it does ok with the 18ft stock trailer i have now, however SHE is getting ready to buy a 4 horse slant load with tack and living quarters. was looking at a 24v becausei can get one used for about $2500 but not having the same luck finding a 12v for similar price so just trying to save some $$$ also didn't know the early 98s had the 12 but definatly willing to opt for the 12 if it will save me alot of headache. had i known this was coming up i would have just bought a new truck instead of the car i just got

will my existing dash work?

i think it would be so much easier for you to just sell your truck and buy one with a Cummins already in it.

^It would probably be easier, and you might only save a small amount by swapping...

I am using my dash by just swapping over my sensors. And for the record there will probably be a headache, but just less of one with a 12v. The injection pump(p7100) from 94-98 was also a lot more reliable than the 98.5-02 VP44

Go to 4btswaps.com and check out some of their stickies... The site says 4bt, but there are a TON of 12v swaps there along with other motors like isuzu diesels and some others I hadn't heard of before
