Default DIY 3-4" Lift Kit Advice

So I just got done putting new shocks on my 2001 Ram 1500 sport today and ran into a little issue that I would like everyone's opinions on. So I put in some Skyjacker shocks all around that are for a 0-5" lift kit. I did this because I didnt want to be limiting the suspension flex at all. the back didnt flex anymore (droop) but the front got about 3 more inches... YAY! until I looked at the coils which were no longer seated at all. haha so here is my quandry. I'm going to put some 3" spacers in the front and then do a 6" block in the rear (remove the factory one) so overall the truck will have 3" more lift. Now here is where you guys and gals come in, I'm toying with doing a 4" lift all around, 4" spacer and 7" rear block, but I will need to fab some control arms, no big deal. I'm just going to make some that are 0.8" longer than stock like these:

My only question is what size tubing should I use? and wall? I'm thinking 2" x .134 wall. It sees mud and fun every weekend friday-sunday and I definitely make it flex to its FULL potential and a little more. Lets here it!


oh also what else do I have to do besides control arms for this? or maybe can I just buy springs for a 5" kit and do a 5"? Will I have to re-clock the transfer case for a 5" or is that only for 7"?

or can I get some 2500 cummins front springs? how much lift are those good for and do I need to mod my current spring mounts to put those in? same dia. ect??

Ok, well, why not just buy a 5'' lift kit? I mean seriously. topgun has'em pretty cheap dude. They ain't the best kit on the market, but so what? The price is good enough for me.

2500 springs, will be direct replacement. Nets about 2'' of lift.

You don't have to do anything with control arms until, you get passed 3'' of lift. So if you are looking at going to 4'', my opinion is - screw it, buy a kit. lol

You don't have to touch the transfercase until that 6''+ range.

Yea really.. Instead of throwing together parts from a bunch of different places and buy an actual lift.. Much easier to do that

Just buy a kit and be done. A lot easier. Also, might be good to keep all this in one thread. Theyre all on the same basic topic.

Wasnt OP trying to clear 39.5's??? Instead of spending money on a kit and redoing it later on just save up and get all done at once

Hey thanks guys for the quick responses. I'm a full time student studying rocket science (no ****) so I dont have time to work. This is simply a band-aid fix for now. I'll be honest, I cant afford a lift kit right now. I have access to a full on fab shop so I can build **** for just the price of material. I'm thinking I'll maybe try and score some 2500 springs and see if those work. do they have to be out of a cummins or can they be a gas motor?

If you re-read my post its becasue my front shocks have too much travel so I'm just going to fill out the space and make it work because dlyter09 is right. After I graduate I will buy a Cherokee to take wheeling so then I can just park the Ram to make this a full time wheeler that needs to be trailered. 39.5+ boggers, 4-link, dove tail ect, so again, another reason for this to be cheap for now.

Anyways, do those springs have to be a cummins or can they be a gas 2500? Thanks!

If you really are a fulltime student AND studying in such a field, then your research skills are fundamentally lacking. So many threads and examples here on this site plus other sites in which you were given links too.

I agree...all the OPs threads should be merged together.
