so I have a 1994 dodge 1500 5.2l and I just cleaned the throttle body and rerouted the spark plug wires the correct way. than I started it and let it run for a little bit and when I went to drive it I put it in reverse the rpm's dropped to about 400-500 and seems like its going to die then jumps back up 900-1000 and it did this in every gear except for neutral. Most likely it isn't a transmission problem, but a bad IAC could cause that. Check and clean the IAC and then see if it does better. Also, did it do this BEFORE you cleaned the throttle body? Also, did you take the throttle body off when you cleaned it?

 

yes I took the throttle body off when I cleaned it and I did clean the IAC. I don't remember it do this before.

Did you disconnect the negative battery cable before cleaning throttle body?
If not disconnect it now, wait 10 minutes or so and reconnect it.

Ok, it's gotta be something with the engine unless the torque converter lockup clutch is not disengaging, or the torque converter is failing. So I am gonna assume it is with the engine. But first, can you check for OBD2 codes? Note: The OBD2 light won't turn on for most transmission codes, and the keyswitch trick only works for O/D related codes, so you will have to use a ScanTool of sorts.

 

When you cleaned the IAC, did you twist or turn the pintle? Double check connections and grounds.

 

I think the pintle did get turned a little bit.

If it turned, it is jacked. Replace it. It is a stepping motor and will neot be able to rest the steps after it has been turned.



Yes, it is OBDI. 1996 is when OBDII was required.
